Furious!!!!

I’m absolutely enraged right now. I’m mad at two factions for a wrong that was as harmless at not using a turn signal to change lanes. Fox 4 news aired a story tonight about a teacher in the Alvarado Intermediate School that showed Saving Private Ryan to his students.

First, let’s deal with what the teacher did. Granted, this movie might be a little much for an 11 year old child, but let me go ahead and negate that with the fact that this took place in Alvarado! I’m sure Saving Private Ryan is not the worst thing this virgin child has ever seen. I would love to do another story of all the movies that this family owns at home. I bet we might find some Easter eggs in there that would make the movie in question look like The Sound of Music, but that is pure speculation. Saving Private Ryan was one of the greatest movies ever made and definitely the greatest war movie ever made. Now, I know that doesn’t give any rights to this teacher to show it to his class, but come on!

I said that I was mad at two factions. The first faction is this family that went to the media about this movie. Not only was it totally uncalled for, but it shows what regard teachers get sometimes. It is legitimate for this family to have a gripe about this movie. I’m a Christian and believe in doing all we can to be careful what we put in front of us; however, Saving Private Ryan is not just entertainment. It depicts as close to war as you can get. I wanted something to throw at the tv when the camera cut to the dad and said “We learned about war in books.” You can’t learn about what the soldiers did for us in a book! Kids can’t appreciate what they can’t grasp. The gripe this family had should have never got past the principal of the school if not the teacher that showed the movie. It makes me sick that this family would choose to ruin (because that is what they did) a teacher’s life, not just his career. I want to call this teacher and tell him that even though it probably wasn’t a good idea to show the movie, he didn’t deserve this. I watched Glory in 7th grade and that had someone’s head get blown off. Did we cry about how gruesome it was? No, we were excited to get to watch a movie. It was also educating. Saving Private Ryan is a must see in my opinion. I remember we watched Romeo and Juliet and we saw nudity in that movie. Did we cry about that? If anyone did, it should have been handled within the immediate authority of the teacher in question.

The other group that angers me is Fox 4. They should have denied this story. They only reason they aired this story was to get viewers. There was no crime done here. They made it sound like this teacher deserved to rot. They ruined a life for a few extra viewers and that makes me sick. I’m so furious at people. People will do anything to start something just because they think they can win. Well, this family won alright. They destroyed another’s life over the greatest war movie ever made. Oh and for what its worth, the teacher didn’t force the kids to watch it. They were allowed to leave the classroom. I think all children should see war at some point in there life. Sometimes, I get disgusted with this bubble Americans put themselves in. There are other places in this world that don’t have a 7/11 on each corner. Our troops die at the age of 17 fighting for our country, but we blackball a 6th grade Social Studies teacher for showing 11 and 12 year olds the perils of war. I think some people should be sent to a 3rd world country for a bit so they can get some prospective. Geeeezz!!

I have to say I do not side with the teacher on this one, and here's why.

But first, we actually watched Glory in the 8th grade, not the 7th (Mr. Wester's US History class). But still your point is valid in that there is nothing wrong with showing a war movie. I don't think that's what is getting this teacher into trouble.

The only thing that the teacher apparantly did wrong (and I'm not sure since I didn't see the story on the news) is if he didn't require parental approval for each child before showing the movie. That is a must for any movie (not just war movie) that is rated R. That should be pretty obvious. And since these kids were 11 and 12 years old, parental approval would be required for even a PG-13 movie (that is what the 13 in PG-13 means). The rating is there for a reason and the teacher overlooked it. Simple as that.

Now, obviously if the teacher had gotten approval from all the parents/guardians, then there wouldn't have been a story since the parents would have no ground to stand on if they'd given prior approval, so it's safe to say then that the teacher did not cover his own butt and take the necessary precautions.

Now remember, this is the last week of school for most districts. It sounds like the teacher neglected to have a lesson ready for the kids (since all the 6th grade state tests are over) and just stuck them in front of this movie. That part is on the teacher. He should have been more prepared -- either by getting parental approval or by planning another activity for his students. My wife teaches 6th grade in this state too. She is having a tough time this last week keeping kids on task and on good behavior since the kids know that the grades are in and the tests are over. Nothing wrong with a movie that can teach the kids something, but you have to cover yourself. This teacher in Alvarado did not, and has brought this on himself.

Not sure why I think the teacher is a "he". I looked back over your post and can't find a gender designation... ah well.

Hey Danny,

Good points. However, I never condoned what the teacher did. I don't think the punishment fit the crime. My main point is that this teacher didn't deserve to be on the news. A reprimand...yes, a parent telling the teacher what's on their mind...yes...but to be on the news for something this stupid...absolutely not! I shouldn't know of this story is what I'm saying...it is just a spit on the integrity of the teacher in general.

Actually, if we had the same teacher for US History and Texas History, which might be the case, then we could have watched Glory in the 8th Grade...I can't remember...but I know I was in Mrs. Gardner's class and I know for sure I had her for Texas History

Ok, I remember now.. I did not have US History with Mrs. Gardner because we were at the new school and I can see the classroom now and the teacher. I don't remember her name, but I know it was different. My original statement stands...I watched Glory in 7th Grade, Texas History. I also do not remember permission slips, but I do not know that for a fact.

Let me redact what I just said. (notice the word choice there...hahaha) I started thinking about what I studied in that "other" history class and I realize that we studied the renaisance and the reformation so this very well could have been world history. Thus...it is still possible that I had Mrs. Gardner for US and Texas History. The mind is a wonderful thing...

You wouldn't have watched Glory in "Texas History" since it deals with the Civil War (part of US History).

Did all these events happen in real time? That is the only question I really have.
